Howdy gang! You gotta love how this winter just does not want to set in on us yet. Up here in the Bay it has been 75 or so for the past week, and beautiful. I'm not complaining, because I know the rain is just around the corner, and we will all be forced into the confines of our Man Caves. Reel servicing, boat work, and house work will all become the order of business. Rock Cod fishing up this way will be done in a mere four days, but everyone south of Point Conception still has about six weeks to fill their freezers for the harsh winter, haha.
There are still plenty of options available to everyone out there, and the weather looks great for this weekend. It's the perfect time to get out there and pull on some fish before the holiday season sets in.
For private boaters looking for a change of pace, I bet most of you have never, if rarely launched out of Santa Barbara Harbor. For those who most often frequent Channel Islands harbor, this could be an interesting change of scenery. In the same amount of time you would spend running to Yellow Banks you could be at Santa Rosa Island. Or, in even less time you could be fishing the west end of Cruz. Bass fishing on the boiler's and in the kelp up that way this year has been fantastic, with almost ridiculous numbers of quality Cod and Whitefish being caught in a little deeper water. For the Stardust, the only sport boat in Santa Barbara, it has been having an amazing year out at Santa Rosa with limits on nearly every trip out there.
If you are entertaining the idea of towing the boat up the beach, but are not into the Cod thing, there are credible rumors of Bonito marauding the East end of Cruz right now. And these aren't the little ones, but the quality six to eight pounders which, on trout gear, can be as much fun as... well whatever your favorite thing to do is. Also, there are some area's along that stretch of the island which have been known to kick out some great fish. Cueva Valdez is one such example that can hold some monster 'Butts and Sea Bass.

Speaking of the Stardust they have been having such a good go at the Rock Cod fishing lately, that they get limits quick enough to spend an hour or so trolling around looking for the Bones closer to home, and have been getting a few each day.
To the south, the Island Spirit had a great day at the islands recently, with limits of Lings for a load of 20 people. The biggest fish went about 25 pounds, now thats a great day of Ling fishing in Southern California no matter how you look at it. Also the bait docks have had live squid for sale, if your into the candy Bait. Give Channel Islands Sportfishing a call before you head out to check on the status of bait if that is what your looking for.
Also, there have been rumors of Sea Bass along the Ventura coast. As I said these are rumors, and I have had no way to verify them, but it is what I heard. And Since the Outerbanks has been posted down by Deep Hole selling squid, I wouldn't be surprised if there is squid elsewhere along the coast.
As I said at the beginning, it is only a matter of time before winter sets in, and I think the time has just about come. Currently the weather and wind forecasts call for minimal harassment over the next couple days. This weekend on the other hand, looks as though there may be a big blow coming through. The only saving grace in this regard is the fact that our weather is about as unpredictable as a Roulette ball in Vegas, especially when your looking five days out. So keep your fingers crossed, and hopefully you can get out this weekend.
Good luck to all of you out there, and until next week, Tight lines and screem'n drags
