Thursday Report-Weekend Possibilities
for local fishing Santa Monica, Long Beach and The Islands of Catalina and San Clemente

Islands!
Catalina
Fishing for Bonito at Catalina continues to be excellent, with fish over 10 pounds being caught. Fly lining a Sardine on light tackle can be a blast! Since a 10 pound or larger Bonito can put op quite a fight, losses on light line can be numerous, especially when fishing on a party boat, with multiple anglers, and many simultaneous hookups! I recommend 25 pound test and a minimum 1/0 hook, when using a Sardine, personally I prefer a 3/0. For Anchovy fishing, use a #2 or #4, and 20 pound test line. Bonito are normally not line or hook shy. I use lighter tackle with an Anchovy, since it does not swim as well with a large hook, resulting in less hookups.
Another method for catching Bonito is using the iron. Surface iron is a preferred method; however, heavier lures work well also, especially a Mega Bait or similar size lure in the 3 to 4 oz range. Cast out as far as you can, and try reeling in at various speeds and various depths to find the combination that the Bonito prefer. You often get bit on the sink, so be alert, and do not swing when bit; keep winding until the line comes tight, and keep a bend in the rod the whole time, then you can set the hook!
Kevin fishing The Pursuit out of 22nd street landing in San Pedro last week, found wide open fishing on the Bonito to 15 pounds on the surface iron. They finished the day off with a great catch of 138 bonito, plus a variety of other species. The Pursuit also fished Wednesday, 11-18 and caught 135 Bonito, plus lots of Sheephead, Whitefish and Rockfish.
Ryan fished Catalina last weekend on his private boat off Long Point and had good fishing for the smaller grade two and three pound Bonito.
San Clemente Island
Not much to report from SCI this week. Rob fished China Point Monday 11-16 with friend Tommy, on his private boat for some outstanding Calico Bass fishing on Plastics, sardines and the iron up to five pounds. Dave fished on Chris's private boat Monday for limits of big Reds and assorted other rockfish, then targeted the Calico Bass for a decent bite on solid three to five pound Bass!
The Amiigo fished last weekend on a 1.5 day trip and caught Two Yellowtail, limits of Whitefish and a bunch of rockfish to go with four Bonito for only 11 anglers.
The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing fished San Nicolas Island Sunday for limits of quality rockfish, and 15 Lingcod.
On the local scene!
Long Beach
Steve fished on his private boat Sunday in the harbor, and found a good bite on the Anchovies for three pound Bonito, some barely legal Calico Bass, a dandy Sand Bass of 20”, and a few short WSB.
The Southern Cal out of Pierpoint landing, a half day boat had a fantastic bite for eight anglers Saturday afternoon on the Bonito, catching 60, that must have been fun?

The Sum Fun out of Dana Wharf had one outstanding ¾ day trip Tuesday, 11-17 for numerous, delicious tasting Sculpin, catching 135, add 24 White fish and 45 Rockfish for the 27 anglers. That’s a whole lot of fish tacos!
Lal on his private boat “Rubber Ducky” fished Monday out at the Horseshoe, and later at Izor’s reef for a slow pick on the sand bass. With excellent tides on Tuesday Lal was perplexed the bite was so slow, only to learn that there had been a 4.8 earthquake in the desert that morning. Nothing like an earthquake to shut down the bite, and give the fish lockjaw! This has happened to me many times in the past, when an earthquake put a giant halt to the fishing that day!
Benny managed to hoop a 12 pound. bug Tuesday night in shallow water out of Long Beach.
Halibut fishing is still a good bet if you can find them in their secret holes, as Dan on his private boat Nefarious caught a 38" 25 pound. Halibut and a 31" 15 pound Halibut on Saturday 11-14, sweet, good job Dan, and kudos to Dean (Bank Robber) for setting him up with the right info! Dan has been a long time successful Halibut fisherman, and won the Marina Del Rey tournament a few years ago with a 50+ lb. fish good for a lot of cash and I believe a new truck, not sure?
Santa Monica Bay/Redondo
While the Bonito bite remains slow, the targeted fish of Bass, Sculpin and Rockfish have been very productive of late. For example the New Del Mar had an excellent halfday run on Saturday 11-15 for 57 Sheephead, 31 Whitefish, 51 Sculpin, 2 Lingcod and 212 Rockfish for 57 anglers. For a half day trip that’s quite exceptional!
Yutaka provided one of the few private boater reports from Marina Del Rey, fishing Sunday 11-15 with a friend. They caught some assorted Rockfish and a very nice Lingcod during the afternoon, while staying until dark to limit out on lobster to 5.9 pounds.
Weekend Weather Forecast!
Some rain in the forecast for Friday night, early Saturday morning, 10-15 knot winds on Saturdaty, five to six foot swells at 15 seconds, with better conditions expected on Sunday. Always check sea conditions whenever possible, before heading out!
Weekend Tides!
Saturday high at 10:46 am 5.1’ low of 0.4 at 6:43pm, Sunday tides with a high of 4.7 at 11:47 am, and a low of 0.7 at 736 pm. Nothing special on the tides front, however, that does not mean the fish won’t bite; it just lessons your odds when the tides are not ideal.
Hey guys and gals, I sure am open to any suggestions you might have on preparing this report, also feel free to ask any questions about tackle, fishing technigues, etc. I'll do my best to accomodate you.
Hook up! Cory
